Despite many attempts, natural light is the only factor that is uncontrollable in the museum environment, and thus makes the light in each museum unique. The light space is the central architectural element of many museum buildings and dips the exhibition rooms underneath into somewhat diffused light. The four videos are produced in the light space of the Kunst Museum Winterthur during the four corner dates of the year. (21.12.17, 21.03.18, 21.06.18, 21.09.18). The Music is based on a program that translates the various stages of brightness into different rhythms and scores.
"Der Mittlere Himmel" is the technical term of average light intensity in all seasons measured at a particular location. The light space is designed to filter and subdue the natural light. Computer controlled shutters sometimes let the light in, sometimes lock it out. Der Mittlere Himmel shines in changeable light, it gives an idea of the natural light. It alternates between gleaming and subdued light. It balances the relationship between control and inhibition, between art and the world.
