Tetrahedron, cone, pentagonal pyramid, (half-)sphere and pyramid. Many of us struggled with calculating the surface areas of these geometric shapes during our school years. They will also play a central role at the Hofmatt 4 school building in future – in the stairwell, these five geometric solids will be mounted on the wall using steel rods. They are all symmetrical shapes, which will be illuminated from various angles by several lamps as well as by the sun, casting distorted, shifting shadows onto the surrounding walls. Over the coming years, the pupils at Hofmatt School will be able to observe the variety of shapes that light can create from these basic geometric forms.
